What is Internal Family Systems Therapy?
Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), aptly nick-named “parts work” is a model that explains how as individuals, we are more than just one thing—we are made up of various parts that are connected to past events and issues. These parts can wreak havoc on our lives, keep us stuck, and cause real problems.
How Does IFS Therapy Work?
The process of parts work allows us to “go inside” and get to know these parts of us. We’ve either fought with them for long enough, or we’ve tried to tuck them away ot avoid discomfort and pain, but that simply doesn’t work! Rather, we start to learn about, understand and even communicate with these parts. As we get to know them we develop clarity about why they exists and what they are trying to do for us—they are usually trying to help us in some way!
As we develop a better connection and relationship with these parts, we can better influence the right kind of change we want. We increase our Self- energy, and we make better decisions with better processes for how we want to direct our lives.
Why Should I Use Internal Family Systems As A Treatment Option?
IFS is known to treat many different issues, symptoms, and mental health problems. IFS has been successful in treating trauma, depression, anxiety, addictions, low motivation, self-worth, suicidal ideation, anger, and much more.
Our work at Secure Connection Counseling is informed by IFS, and your therapist can teach you how to use the model in your own time.
When Do I Need Internal Family Systems Treatments?
IFS can be used immediately in the aftermath of trauma or can be used to help with difficulties one has had for a lifetime. Because IFS is very experiential, one can safely re-visit past moments and develop new relationships with the parts of their inner world that were born or awakened in these challenging times.
Symptoms of trauma may worsen over time. Dealing with them now may help to stop them from getting worse in the future. Getting help with your PTSD can help improve your family’s life. Finding out more about what treatments are working can make it easier to get help and lead to better outcomes.
